SANTA ROSA, Calif. - May 29, 2001 - TrueTime, Inc. (NASDAQ: TRUE), a leading provider of precision time and frequency products, today announced that its NTS-200 Network Time Server plays an important role in the precise timing of lightning strikes across the nation. TrueTime's customer, Global Atmospherics, which owns and operates the U.S. National Lightning Detection Network® (NLDN®), depends on TrueTime's Network Time Server to provide millisecond timing for its lightning detection systems.

Meteorological agencies, airports, and power utilities worldwide depend on Global Atmospherics' lightning location systems to complete their weather data. Lightning is a leading indicator of severe weather used in storm warnings issued to the public, pilots, ground and maintenance crews. Utilities use early storm warnings to pre-position crews and repair equipment for dispatch to vulnerable transmission and distribution lines. After storms, historic lightning data is used to correlate property damage and power outages. This post-storm analysis is especially important to power utilities to verify lightning faults for better design and engineering decisions, to prioritize upgrades, and to improve power delivery performance.

"Global Atmospherics' high quality lightning detection networks run day and night to map when and where lightning strikes. For every lightning strike, six or seven of our remote sensors must see the lightning to report the strike information to the central analyzer. TrueTime's NTS-200 is crucial in this process for accurate communications and time-delay calculations between the sensors and the analyzer. Timing is the number one factor in making our systems accurate and reliable," said Jeff Tuel, vice president of marketing and international sales.

"Our work with Global Atmospherics is a prime example of the importance of precise timing. We are very pleased that our NTS 200 Network Time Server can meet the needs of Global Atmospherics' very sophisticated lightning detection systems," said Scott Davis, TrueTime's director of sales.

The NTS-200 is a member of TrueTime's robust family of Network Time Servers.
