SANTA ROSA, Calif. - March 6, 2001 - TrueTime, Inc. (NASDAQ:
TRUE), a leading provider of precision time and frequency products,
today announced that its powerful NTS-200 Time Servers have been
selected to provide precise timing and synchronization to Ericsson's
GPRS core networks which are being deployed worldwide. GPRS is the
first step towards the evolution to 3G.
GPRS enhances existing GSM and TDMA networks by introducing data
packet transmission, enabling "always on" connectivity
to the mobile Internet. With GPRS, users can enjoy high-speed delivery
of e-mails with large file attachments, web surfing and access to
corporate LANs. GPRS is based on packet switched technology and
allows service providers the opportunity to charge for the amount
of data sent or received rather than connection time. TrueTime's
time servers will provide GPRS operators with accurate time stamps
of when users send or receive information.
"Being selected by Ericsson is a true testament to the need
for very precise timing and synchronization for these sophisticated
high-speed communication networks. Our dedication to building the
best timing solutions for today's complex networks is evident in
our product performance as well as our customer support -- two critical
factors that we met in Ericsson's qualification process," said
Lisa Withers, TrueTime's president and CEO. "The mobile Internet
is the next wave in bringing content to people and we're very excited
to be a part of this evolutionary technology."
About the NTS-200
The NTS-200 derives accurate time directly from the atomic clocks
aboard the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite system. By
using an integrated, 12-channel GPS receiver, every visible satellite
can be tracked and used to maintain accurate and reliable time.
Using the Network Time Protocol (NTP), servers and workstations
on the network automatically synchronize their clocks to the NTS-200
time server. This synchronization process is repeated frequently
as computer clocks are notorious for drifting away from the correct
time. Ease-of-use and remote access are key attributes of the NTS-200
state-of-the-art user interface. Designed with the network administrator
in mind, the NTS-200's built-in web pages offer current status information
and full control of the server. Protocols such as SNMP and FTP are
supported for automated monitoring of the server and convenient
remote system upgrades. The rack-mounted unit is easily installed
and quickly brought online with a few front panel keystrokes. An
auto-detect 100BaseT/10BaseT interface easily integrates with existing
Ethernet network equipment.
Why Time and Synchronization is Vital for
Today's Growing Networks
Precise time and synchronization is vital for voice, data, video
and e-commerce applications. Converged voice and video applications
have timing requirements that demand an ever-increasing reliability
and accuracy not realized with conventional computer clock systems.
E-commerce applications including electronic fund transfers, stock
trading, legal filings, medical record annotations, billing systems
and other applications are dependent on accurate time - usually
traceable to Universal Time Coordinated, UTC. In addition, the network
infrastructure relies on many time dependent processes: fault diagnostics,
network security algorithms, file ordering, database integrity,
and others.
About TrueTime
TrueTime, Inc. designs, develops, manufactures and markets precision
time and frequency products that are essential components used by
many technology based markets to provide greater accuracy and resolution
than can be obtained from conventional timing devices. TrueTime,
Inc. is traded on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol
"TRUE." TrueTime's web site is http://www.truetime.com.
