The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is a client/server application. Each client workstation, router, or server must be equipped with NTP client software to synchronize its clock to the network time server.

TrueTime's NTS-150, NTS-200 and TimeVault are stand-alone, Stratum 1 network time servers used to synchronize all of the NTP software clients on a network. NTP software clients automatically initiate requests for time from the time server in accordance with the Network Time Protocol. Since the clocks of the clients will drift over time, the local NTP client software periodically requests time from the time server to precisely synchronize the local system clock.

In addition to adding the network time server to your network, the NTP client software must be installed on each of the workstations or servers that will interface with the time server. In some cases the client software is already resident in the operating system of the workstation, server or router.

TrueTime advocates the Domain Time II network time synchronization software suite as the preferred software solution for many very good reasons. However, there are some network devices and operating systems that Domain Time II does not support. Below are links to time client software for various operating systems and devices that can be downloaded as freeware or shareware. In addition are links to operating system suppliers discussions regarding configuring time clients.

Novell NetWare
- Netware version 5 and above includes a client (TIMESYNC.NLM) that is capable of using an NTP server. See the July 3, 1999 AppNote, Using Network Time Protocol (NTP) with NetWare 5
- For NetWare version 4.2, See Monitoring and Maintaining Time Synchronization OR Go to the NetWare 4.2 documentation section of the Novell website and choose Network Management Services. You will find information on time syncronization under Supervising the Network.
- Searching the Novell Knowledgebase for NTP will give you the most recent documentation.
- Cadence Time Synch., available for NetWare and Windows NT.
- SNTPCLNT, available for NetWare 3.x, 4.x, 5.x.

Macintosh
-Mac OS 8.5 and better has NTP support via the Date and Time Control Panel
-Mac-NTP - Direct Download
-NetChronometer
-Vremya: requires Open Transport TCP/IP version 1.1

OS/2
- NTP Client for OS/2
- Hobbes OS/2 Archive

maintains a good list of OS/2 Time Clients in /pub/os2/apps/internet/time/

Java
- JSNTP: Java 1.1, not tested under Java 2

Cisco IOS Devices
Cisco provides online documentation for the IOS system. For IOS 12, The master index of the Configuration Guide gives the exact page numbers for NTP configuration. For IOS 10 and 11, NTP configuration information can be found under Managing the System in the Configuration guide.

BeOS
- NTP (client) by ABiSoft is available from BeBits.com . Just seach on NTP.

Firewalls

Raptor - Go to the Service and Support section. Choose your product and version. Now select the Documentation section. NTP setup can be found in the Configuration Guide under NTP.
